Readings from Italianità

Italianità: Contemporary Art Inspired by the Italian Immigrant Experience is an anthology of the art and writing of 59 artists, most the children or grandchildren of people who escaped the poverty of the Mezzogiorno to make new lives for themselves here in l’ameriga. ”We carry the history of our families and our culture in our psyches as well as our genes,” says B. Amore, one of this event’s four speakers, all of whom call the Boston area home.

B. Amore researched seven generations of her family, culminating in a monumental exhibition of sculpture, collage, and artifacts at the Ellis Island Museum in 2020. Lifeline, Filo della Vita: An Italian American Odyssey, traveled to Boston, San Francisco, Rome, and finally to Napoli where her family’s journey began. She continues to exhibit.

Joe Cultrera tells stories through film. Over the decades he has brought us into his hometown of Salem with stories about the decline of factory life and the commercialization of the city’s witch history. Hand of God, which was featured on PBS’s Frontline, documents the effect on his close-knit family of sexual abuse by clergy in his own parish.

Joanne Mattera is a widely exhibited painter (in Boston at Arden Gallery) who brings her visual art community together through word and image, whether in her Joanne Mattera Art Blog or in projects like Italianità, in which the descendants of Italian immigrants relate how culture and experience have shaped them into the artists they are today.

Charyl (Urbano) Weissbach) comes from a family of makers—a grandfather and uncles who worked in Connecticut’s metal foundries and grandmothers who imbued their handwork with a sense of Neapolitan Baroque. “Given my creative heritage,“ she says, “it’s not surprising that I pursued a creative path.”

The feast of the pardon

The feast of Our Lady of the Angels of Portiuncula and its associated indulgence is a way to focus on the importance of Mary and the Franciscan tradition in the Church, according to one friar.

The Aug. 2 feast is found in the Franciscan tradition and marks the dedication of the parish church in Assisi, Italy, called Portiuncula, or “little portion,” which is one of those that St. Francis rebuilt in obedience to Christ’s command to “rebuild my church.”

Helene Sula - Two O’Clock on a Tuesday at Trevi Fountain

Like many young professionals, Helene settled into a steady 9-5, watching the clock tick by and dreaming of seeing the world one day. But after a climbing accident leaves her bedbound for months, she finds a new voice connecting with others online and starts a blog to write about her true passion: travel. When her blog takes off and a sponsored trip overseas opens her eyes, she wonders: could she lead a stable life while traveling the world?

From skinny dipping in the icy Baltic and hiking Germany's storied Black Forest, to wrestling with visa applications and apartment hunting in medieval Heidelberg, Helene shares the realities--both the magical and the mundane--that come with chasing bold dreams and learning that home is where you make it. For those who fear change, the secret lies in taking calculated risks.

Uplifting yet candid, this travel memoir will inspire others to take chances and transform their own lives. But you don't have to uproot your life to find meaning--just have the heart to take a leap.

Emma and the Angel of Central Park At I AM Books

Author and journalist Maria Teresa Cometto talks of artist Emma Stebbins, her Boston connection through Charlotte Cushman, and women in arts

"In the heart of Central Park there is an angel. It is the Angel of the Waters statue, which appeared on the Bethesda Fountain on May 31, 1873. It has since earned a place among the city's icons-a deserved place for its classical beauty, although not everyone knows that it is much more: a symbol of love, harmony, healing, and rebirth, as the historical motivation for its creation affirms." This is the story of the angel and the artist who created it.

Emma Stebbins created the Angel while living and working in Rome, Italy, in the second half of the nineteenth century. She was born in New York City and was “married” to the Bostonian actress Charlotte Cushman. The Angel of the Waters and Bethesda Fountain, inaugurated in 1873, were meant to celebrate the clean pure waters in New York City and the wonders of Central Park for all New Yorkers. Women. Gays. Immigrants. A bridge between the U.S. and Italy. Environmental consciousness. Each of these is an integral part of the statue.

Laura Benedetti - A Country of Paper

Laura Benedetti presents her latest book.

A Country of Paper spans two countries (the United States and Italy), three generations of women (Alice, her daughter Jane and her granddaughter Sara), and more than sixty years, from World War II to the 21st century. It tackles issues of cultural identity, family ties, displacement, and loss as it follows Sara in her journey to L’Aquila, Italy, to fulfill her grandmother’s last wish. Her personal quest intersects with the town’s struggle to recover from the disastrous 2009 earthquake, as Sara painfully uncovers her family’s history while trying to find her bearings in a devastated urban landscape.

FROM ITALY TO AMERICA

We seek to install a bronze sculpture at St. Leonard Church (SLC) that symbolizes the first steps down a gangway from Italy to America that Italian and other immigrants walked after crossing the Atlantic since the mid 1800’s.

With love and devotion. descendants can walk in the footsteps of their ancestors whose dream it was to make a better social, economic, and spiritual life for their families and their future. These footprints led directly into the first Italian Catholic Church in new England which they built in 1873 for their spiritual guidance and to grow their new community. Now the North Ends’s Catholic congregation, St. Leonard Church (SLC), includes Sacred Heart and St. Stephen Church, the St. Mary Chapel at Casa Maria Housing, and St. John’s School, and is the hub for spiritual collaboration by the North End’s well known religious societies. It is in the heart of the North End with an iconic Peace Garden. It will remind all visitors of the values, challenges, courage, and dedication it took to make their vision a reality and inspire its continuity and evolution.

About the Artist Nancy Schön. the sculpture,

The most magnificent movement of all” - John Adams

This lecture on tea is a fascinating look at how tea has been enjoyed over the centuries, from its origins in China and India as the Camellia sinensis—an evergreen growing primarily in tropical and sub-tropical climates—to its adoption by Britain and its colonies in the eighteenth century as the drink of choice.

Once the drink of choice in Britain and its colonies, it even was once part of the Boston Tea Party on December 16 in 1773 that led up to the American Revolution.
